The Limited X-ray Technician program is an accelerated, intensive four-month training program designed to prepare students to perform basic X-ray procedures in outpatient clinical settings. Students will be expected to:

  • Complete regular assignments and quizzes
  • Study independently outside of scheduled class time in order to keep up with the accelerated pace and rigor of the course material
  • Demonstrate mastery of the material through homework assignments, quizzes, exams, lab time, and practical assessments
  • Punctually attend weekly clinical hours at an assigned site, consistently demonstrate initiative and professionalism, and successfully complete required X-ray competencies and pass offs under clinical site supervision
  • Clinical Site Placement: Students are responsible for contacting and securing their own clinical site placement after beginning the program. Suitable sites generally include family practice clinics or urgent care centers that perform X-rays. The program may provide limited assistance by offering contact information for potential sites to students who have made multiple unsuccessful attempts to secure a placement. Additional information will be provided during class.

Upon successful completion, students will be prepared to take the Radiology Limited Practical Technician (LPT) exam through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This is also known as the ARRT Limited Scope Exam.

Employment Opportunities
Graduates of the Limited X-ray Technician program may find employment in outpatient settings, where they may perform basic X-rays in combination with other responsibilities, such as medical assistant duties. Typical workplaces include urgent care centers and family practice clinics.

What is the difference between the Limited X-ray Tech program and the full Radiography Technology program?
The Limited X-ray Tech program trains students to perform basic X-ray procedures commonly encountered in clinical and outpatient settings, such as urgent care centers and family practice clinics. It provides a solid foundation in radiography and is ideal for individuals exploring a future in medical imaging or seeking to advance their current healthcare career and earning potential.

Graduates may work in various outpatient medical clinics, but are not authorized to perform certain advanced procedures, including those involving the C-arm, Fluoroscopy, or other specialized X-ray exams.

In contrast, a Radiography Technology program prepares students for a full career as Radiologic Technologists (RTs). RTs are licensed to perform a wider range of imaging procedures and are typically preferred for hospital employment.

Students interested in advanced imaging specialties—such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound, or Mammography—must complete a full Radiography Technology program and pursue additional certification or cross-training in those areas.
