MTECH’s  Safety Inspection course is a 16 hour standardized curriculum that provides the necessary training and testing for individuals performing vehicle safety inspections. 

MTECH offers a combined 16 hour course for the certification in two of the three separate Vehicle Safety Inspector Certifications: Passenger Vehicles/ Light Trucks, Motorcycles In Utah there are three separate Vehicle Safety Inspector Certifications; Passenger Vehicles/Light Trucks, Motorcycles, and Heavy Trucks/Trailers/Buses.

MTECH’s 16 hour course only offers training for the certification in Passenger Vehicles/Light Trucks and Motorcycles. MTECH does not offer a course for certification in Heavy Trucks/Trailers/Buses. 

Upon completion of the program, participants must score 80% or more on the final examination and performance checklist to achieve competency for the course and receive a certificate. Individuals who successfully complete the training will be eligible to apply for their Vehicle Inspection Certification from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Registration Fall 2023 opens April 20, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. online on the MTECH Student Portal and remains open until classes are full. It is recommended to create your MTECH Student Portal account in advance.

  • Students should coordinate with home high school counselors prior to registration.
  • Students need to be able to show that they have some mechanic experience.
  • All students must have a valid driver’s license, and is recommended to have a 10th grade competency level in Reading & English.
  • To receive state certification; student must be 18 years old, or 17 years old and enrolled in an automotive apprenticeship program.
