Medical Coders play a significant part of the healthcare system. Medical Coders review medical documentation for services provided to patients and use various classification systems to code encounters for insurance reimbursement purposes. They work regularly with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure accuracy in both service and diagnosis codes.

The need for qualified medical coders has greatly increased due to demand for health care services and the tightening of government guidelines related to health care coverage, patient services, and reimbursement processes. 

This program will train students to properly locate, document, and validate appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes using current ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding manuals for professional services. Coursework will include knowledge of medical, legal and ethical responsibilities, as well as anatomy and medical terminology. This program will open opportunities for you  in doctor’s offices, clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, labs, public health facilities and insurance agencies.

Students will be prepared to test for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Students that successfully pass the examinations will be nationally certified as medical coders with the AAPC.

Registration is open on the last Monday of each month. Students usually start the first Monday of the following month. To check seat availability, create a new student account in the MTECH Student Portal and check seat availability or call Student Services at 801-753-6282.

  • Basic computer and digital literacy skills required.
  • High school students should coordinate with home high school counselors prior to registration.
  • This program requires either the completion of the Medical Billing Program or at least one year of medical front office experience and a letter of recommendation from a physician or medical office manager. This recommendation must include the number of years of experience the individual has in a medical field.

On Friday, students will be assigned a HYBRID assignment to complete outside of class. All Hybrid assignments must be completed and submitted by 7:30 am on the following Monday for credit, otherwise the student will receive an absence.

Medical Coders review patient encounters and properly extract codes that accurately reflect the services provided. The codes can include codes for office visits, hospital stays, and tests such as lab work or procedures. Coders use standardized codes from CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS guidelines.

Medical Coders can work in a variety of office and hospital settings, for insurance companies or third-party coding services.

Attention to detail, good problem-solving and critical thinking skills. In-depth knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy. Organization, time management and good communication skills. Basic math, bookkeeping and accounting skills.

Introduction to Medical Coding
The Introduction to Medical Coding course starts with a new student orientation and an outline of the Medical Coding course and program policies. Students complete assignments in Word and Excel that are essential for the workplace. Students create a cover letter and current resume.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 1
The Coding I course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. This course will discuss the role of a Medical Coder and provide students with a format of how ICD-10-CM codes are created and found in the index and tabular. This course will also review the current set of ICD-10-CM guidelines for each coding chapter and body system.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 2
The Coding 2 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. This course will introduce students to CPT, HCPCS Level II National Codes and Modifiers. Students will be introduced to the first section of Anesthesia in CPT and differentiate between the different types of Anesthesia and how to report these services.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 3
The Coding 3 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. Students will study and select correct CPT and diagnosis codes for the General Surgery and Integumentary sections in CPT. Students will also begin an introduction to healthcare, body structure and directional terminology and anatomy.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 4
The Coding 4 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. Students will study and select correct CPT and diagnosis codes for the Musculoskeletal, Respiratory and Bloom Forming Organs and Immune System sections in CPT. Students will also study and test on terminology and anatomy for each body system.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 5
The Coding 5 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. Students will study and select correct CPT and diagnosis codes for the Cardiovascular, Lymphatic and Digestive System sections in CPT. Students will also study and test on terminology and anatomy for each body system.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 6
The Coding 6 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. Students will study and select correct CPT and diagnosis codes for the Endocrine, Nervous, Ear, Eye, Radiology, Pathology, Laboratory and Medicine System sections in CPT. Students will also study and test on terminology and anatomy for each body system.
Diagnostic Coding & Anatomy Block 7
The Coding 7 course is designed to introduce students to the business side of medicine in the outpatient setting and provide the student with the skill and knowledge necessary to analyze and extract key information from the medical record to assign ICD-10-CM codes. Students will learn about the most current changes to the Evaluation and Management section of CPT. Students will differentiate between a new and established patient and between inpatient and outpatient. Students will ao review Reimbursement, HIPAA and Compliance guidelines as they prepare to take several practice tests to prepare to take the Certified Professional Coder exam.
