The Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair program prepares students for entry-level employment as automotive technicians through hands-on, real-world training. Students gain experience working safely in a shop environment while learning to properly use automotive tools.

Throughout the program, students develop skills to diagnose and repair essential vehicle systems, including vehicle lighting, electrical, and safety components. Training also focuses on performing routine maintenance repairs on ignition systems, HVAC, fuel, exhaust, emissions, brakes, suspension and steering, and tire and wheel components. Additionally, students will gain experience maintaining transmissions and transaxles.

In addition to technical skills, the program emphasizes workplace professionalism and career readiness. Students build a professional portfolio and develop job-search skills to prepare for successful entry into the automotive industry.

MTECH Program Certificate in Automotive Technology MLR

Are there many jobs available?
Yes! There are many jobs for our students throughout the region. We do not offer formal job placement. However, recruiters contact us and often hire our students while they are still completing the program. It is highly recommended to seek employment while still in the Automotive Program. This will help you maximize your learning experience.

I already took some classes at my high school, can I skip any of the MTECH classes?
Yes, you can test out of any MTECH automotive course by taking the Professional ASE Certification Exam that proves your competency in that area of study.

Can members of the public bring in cars to have your students work on them?
No. We cannot work on cars for the public. As a student you can work on your own car in our shop, but you will be responsible for purchasing the parts and supplies needed.

Can I take multiple classes at once so that I am able to finish the program sooner?
Currently this is not an option, but we are planning to have this as an option starting in August of 2026.

What if I have my learner’s permit but not my Driver’s License?
A learner permit can be used to register for the course, but you must have a Driver’s License prior to the first day of class. Email of photo of your license or learner’s permit to automotive@mtec.edu.

Is passing the ASE tests required?
No. These tests are challenging. Many experienced technicians do not pass on their first attempt. We use the ASE test as a “high bar to shoot for” rather than a requirement to complete/pass each course. These tests measure mastery rather than proficiency.

What tools do I need?
While all automotive technicians are required to have their own set of tools to work successfully in industry, we only require our students to have a flashlight and safety glasses. Our shop is equipped with all of the tools required to do course work.

What is Hybrid Learning?
This refers to online learning. Every Friday Automotive students will have an online assignment that they can complete from home rather than coming to campus.

Do I need to take the courses in order from A1 to A8?
No. The Automotive Courses do not need to be taken in numerical order.

What type of shop can I work in after completing this program?
After Year One students will have learned the skills needed to work as a Quick Lane/Tire Technician. After Year Two students will have learned the skills needed to work as a Full Line Technician in an independent shop or dealership.
