Silvio Suarez, graduate of the Culinary Arts program at Mountainland Technical College, was selected as the MTECH 2018 Student of the Year.

During a series of events at the Utah State Capitol in recognition of being named the MTECH Student of the Year, Silvio Paolo had an opportunity to visit with Utah’s Governor, Gary R. Herbert.

“It was such a great blessing. I never thought I was going to meet such an important and successful person and also be able to talk to him, get his advice and take a picture with him. It was fantastic. I will never forget this wonderful experience I had,” Suarez said.

Silvio Suarez and Governor Gary Herbert

Silvio is originally from Equador.  His family later moved to Arizona. Silvio attended BYU to learn English. He later attended Columbia College in Business Management but had a struggle making sense of the curriculum.

Silvio later heard from friends about MTECH. His wife had always suggested he become a chef because he was such a good cook, so he followed his dreams. Silvio is proud of his family and wants them to be proud of him as well, so he chose to attend MTECH in Culinary Arts. Silvio encouraged himself to become the best. Silvio dreams to be the best chef around.

Silvio wakes up early around 5:30 a.m. to prepare and head to his job at a restaurant where he cleans. At 7:30 a.m. he attends MTECH until 11 a.m. After class he heads back to the restaurant where he manages and prepares to open the store. He works until 10:30 p.m. each day.

Silvio knows about the importance of education so he chose MTECH. He has a wonderful wife and a one year old son. He is hoping to complete his education and become a great chef managing his own restaurant. In Silvio words, “MTECH is the meaning of a good education”.
