In an emergency, AEMTs are generally dispatched by a 911 operator, given the location of the incident and a brief report of what to expect to find once on scene. An AEMT's role is to work with other first responders on scene, and during transport, to ensure the safety of others as well as the health and well-being of the patients they are attending to. Prehospital care is the main function of an AEMT with the end goal being definitive care in a hospital where they will be met by highly trained medical personnel.
Advanced EMT (AEMT) is the second level of emergency medicine. To reach this next level of certification, AEMTs will complete additional training hours, learn additional skills, and gain more confidence in their patient care. Additional skills taught at this level include, but are not limited to: intravenous infusion, advanced airway management, and medication administration. Students must be at least 18 years of age and be certified at the EMT level in order to take the AEMT course.
This program is for students who have completed a Utah EMT program and are seeking the Advanced level. The AEMT program includes the following skill competencies:
- Foundations of AEMT
