The primary purpose of a phlebotomist is to draw blood for tests, donations, transfusions, and research. MTECH’s Phlebotomy program will teach you these skills in both a classroom and  laboratory setting. 

The Phlebotomy program is a 90-hour program, completed over 8 weeks that sets the foundation for your work as a phlebotomist. In this program you will learn theory and practice of basic and advanced phlebotomy, including the healthcare setting, overview of the human body, blood collection procedures, and special procedures. As part of your training, you will draw blood from classmates and volunteers to gain practical experience. All students are required to participate as a patient and a phlebotomist with their classmates. The final exam will consist of a written test, and a two part skills test.

During this program you will learn laboratory skills including: 

  • Venipuncture procedures: 
    • Butterfly needles
    • Multisample needles 
    • Needle to syringe method and blood transfer devices 
    • Proper patient identification
    • Test requisition
    • Order of draw 
    • IV placement
  • Dermal puncture procedures: 
    • Hemoglobin
    • Hematocrit
    • Newborn screen 
    • Glucose 
    • Micro-collection container
  • Special procedures: 
    • Syncope
    • Urinalysis 
    • Throat swab 
    • Blood culture collection
    • Specimen transport
    • Centrifugation
    • ESR test

Registration is open, please see the schedule below. It is recommended to create your MTECH Student Portal account in advance.

Upon registration, you will register and submit payment for the first course in the program. Some fees and materials may be required upfront, while some may be paid later throughout the program.

While not required, you may make a deposit, in person or online, for the full program upon registration to be held in your student account.

Course Descriptions

Phlebotomy I
Students will learn about the past and present of phlebotomy practices, infection control, equipment, safety, the circulatory system, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, preanalytical consideration, venipuncture, straights venipuncture, butterfly venipuncture, special collections, patient identification, and other relevant skills.
Phlebotomy II
Students will learn about advanced phlebotomy procedures to ensure adequate knowledge and skills in their professional field. Students will be able to hone their communication skills as well as their phlebotomy skills, while practicing real life scenarios in a controlled classroom environment. Students will be learning about phlebotomy jobs and how to prepare for the field by applying and demonstrating all skills learned.
