The Nail Technician program provides the skills needed to work in a beauty spa or nail salon, performing services such as manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements. Instruction includes artificial nail techniques, such as nail tips and sculpted nails, using acrylic or gel to create these enhancements.

Additional training covers nail art, gel polish, mechanical techniques, sanitation and salon safety, disorders of the nail and skin, professional ethics, salon management, and licensing laws and rules.

This program includes 300 clock hours of instruction required by the State of Utah for licensure. Students are prepared to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology/Barbering Licensure examination required for licensure.

The Data Analytics program prepares students for roles in technology, finance, healthcare, ecommerce, manufacturing and more. The competency-based curriculum provides training through real-world simulations, personalized mentoring, and practical coursework. Students develop skills in initiating data projects, sourcing information, transforming datasets, analyzing data, and presenting results which form an essential toolkit for the field of data analytics.

Minimum Age Requirement: 17 years old. High school students must be in their senior year.

Enrollment is based on a randomized selection process.

  • Complete and satisfy score requirements on the Entrance Assessment administered by the Testing Center.
  • Submit pre-registration form.

How to Apply

Submit MTECH Application

Applying is free and easy! When you apply, please choose “undecided” as your program choice. You will select Nail Technician after being accepted to MTECH.

Take the Entrance Assessment

Admission requirements may be met by taking the Entrance Assessment OR by providing qualifying documentation. The Entrance Assessment can be taken at a Testing Center, and qualifying documents can be sent to transcripts@mtec.edu.

A pre-registration form must be submitted each cycle.

Pre-registration forms must be submitted by 5:00 PM the Friday before the registration date. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Accept Placement

If chosen, you will be notified via email on the registration day to confirm your placement. You must confirm your place within 3 business days.

If chosen as an alternate, you will be placed on a waiting list. For every cycle not chosen, you will receive a preferential point to help increase the chances for next time.

Course Descriptions

Nail Technician I
This course will explore the history of nail history, basic anatomy, skin and nail structure and growth, as well as recognize and prevent infections. You will study the fundamentals of manicures, pedicures, nail tips and wrap application, acrylic(s), gel(s), polish and their applications. You will then demonstrate these procedures using the current techniques and electrical equipment of the profession. Discuss the importance of communicating effectively with clients and of conveying a professional image. Students must meet industry and State standards in safety and sanitation.
Employment Preparation
Students will learn about business, employment, professionalism, sanitation, safety standards and creating a professional portfolio and resume.
Advanced Nail Technique
This course requires practice in current nail trends, advanced nail art, nail shaping and techniques.
Professional Development
In the Professional Development course, students will build on the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for application on the clinic floor. Students will prepare to pass the State of Utah licensure exams.
Nail Technician II Clinical
This course builds on the foundation skills learned in Nail Technician I and provides additional instruction in nail art techniques. While in this course you must fulfill all the requirements of an industry employee in performing a number of nail services. In addition, you will study work ethics, time management skills and essential business skills, licensing and laws.
