MTECH’s IV Certification course is a 21-hour program, completed over 2 weeks. The course was developed for healthcare professionals with prior phlebotomy experience, expanding skills and enhancing patient care. This comprehensive program provides in-depth training in intravenous therapy techniques and procedures. With our IV Certification course, students acquire the expertise needed to confidently perform the placement of IV catheters.

Students will place IV’s on classmates and volunteers. All students are required to participate as a patient and a phlebotomist with their classmates. The final exam will consist of a written test and IV skills tests.

Registration Dates:
This course is offered several times throughout the year. Please see the Student Portal for available dates.

Minimum Age Requirement: 17 years old. High school students must be in their senior year.

Registration opens at 8:00 AM in Learning Stream, and remains open until classes are full.

  • Satisfy Entrance Requirements with Testing Center.
  • Prior phlebotomy experience required.
    • Experience from work or by completing a program in nursing (LPN minimum), Advanced EMT, Medical Assisting, or Phlebotomy.

  • Students will receive a transcript of credit earned upon completion of the course.

Do I have to be 18 yrs old to start the program?
You must be 17 yrs old and at least a senior in high school to take the program. If you are still 17 yrs old at the completion of the program, it may be difficult to find employment until reaching 18 yrs old and completion of HS. These restrictions depend on the employer.

Do I need to buy my own scrubs for class?
Yes, you will need to purchase at least one pair of scrubs to have at the start of class. You may buy any brand and color of scrubs for our program. They need to fit well and be appropriate for a healthcare setting. No company logos can be on the scrubs in the classroom (ex: Intermountain, Revere, Biolife, etc.).

Will I need to get IV’s when I am in the class?
Yes, all students are required to participate as a patient and a phlebotomist with their classmates.

Do I need any phlebotomy experince to take this course?
Students must have prior experience with IVs. This may come from work or by completing a program in nursing (minimum of LPN), Advanced EMT, Medical Assisting, or Phlebotomy. Proof of experience must be emailed to phlebotomy@mtec.edu before being eligible to register.

How many days can I be absent while in this program?
You are not allowed absences due to the short timeline of the program. Any absences will lead to not completing the course with a certification.

How to Apply

Submit MTECH Application

Applying is free and easy! When you apply, please choose “undecided” as your program choice. You will select IV Certification after being accepted to MTECH.

Take the Entrance Assessment

Admission requirements may be met by taking the Entrance Assessment OR by providing qualifying documentation. The Entrance Assessment can be taken at a Testing Center, and qualifying documents can be sent to transcripts@mtec.edu.

Submit Proof of Phlebotomy Experience

Experience from work or education is sufficient. Phlebotomy experience must be emailed to phlebotomy@mtec.edu.

Register for IV Certification

Once previous steps have been completed, eligibility is met to register for the first course within the program. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tuition and fees are due for the first course upon registration.

Prospective students can register through Learning Stream or in person at Student Services.

To register, you will use your Canvas login and password and will need your MTECH Student ID number. These items are provided in the email you received after your MTECH application; however, if you cannot find this information, please connect with our Student Services team prior to registration day.

Course Description

IVCE 1000
MTECH’s IV Certification course will teach you IV placement skills in both a classroom and laboratory setting.

The IV Certification course is a 21-hour program, completed over 2 weeks that sets the foundation for IV placement. In this program you will learn theory and practice of IV placement including the equipment, risk factors, placement areas, and IV complications. As part of your training, you will insert IV’s on classmates and volunteers to gain practical experience. The final exam will consist of a written test, and a skills test.
