Janet Wayman loved her previous job but always longed for more stability in her schedule throughout the year. During a lull in her career, Janet thought, “I should do something different.” This is when Janet started looking into Mountainland Technical College.
Janet had three of her kids go through various programs at MTECH, and with the support of her husband, she jumped right into classes. “I am 47,” states Janet, “it was really brave of me to go back to school, and I wanted to make going back to school worth it.”
Janet joined the Medical Billing and Coding program. Towards the end of her time in the program, her instructor, Amber Price, encouraged her to compete at Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) in Medical Law and Ethics. “It scared me to death,” exclaimed Janet, “I wasn’t sure I could do that!”
Not only did Janet compete in the event, she excelled. The test consisted of 100 questions that had to be completed in 90 minutes. “I felt like the test at nationals was easier than the one at state,” jokes Janet. In order to be invited on the national stage, competitors must receive a 70% or better on the test. There were about seven individuals that went on stage for that event. Of those seven, Janet placed bronze in her event.
This is a huge accomplishment for Janet and the Medical Billing and Coding program. Janet didn’t just excel in her events, but she made going back to school worth it. Congratulations Janet.
