Students and employees are encouraged to stay informed about their potential exposures and individual risk factors.

WASATCH WEST LOCATIONS

Confirmed measles cases have been connected to our community in Heber City. If you have attended classes or recently visited the Wasatch West location, you may have been present in a classroom or space during a potential exposure on November 20.

If you attend classes at the Wasatch West location, please do not come to campus on Monday, November 24. and Tuesday, November 25.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MEASLES

Measles is a highly contagious airborne illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the space.

Individuals are considered protected if they have written documentation of two doses of a measles-virus-containing vaccine (such as the MMR vaccine) or laboratory evidence of immunity.

SYMPTOMS

Measles symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after exposure. Common symptoms include:

  • High fever (sometimes higher that 104F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red or watery eyes
  • A rash that appears 3-5 days after the first symptoms

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

Measles can lead to serious health issues, such as:

  • Pneumonia
  • Swelling of the brain (encephalitis)
  • In rare cases, death

IF YOU DEVELOP SYMPTOMS

If you, or someone in your household, begins experiencing symptoms consistent with measles:

  • Avoid contact with others, especially those who are unvaccinated or at higher risk.
  • Stay home to prevent the spread of the virus on campus or in the community.
  • Call your healthcare provider before attending in person. Let them know you may have the measles so they can provide instructions.

If you believe you may have measles or were exposed, please do not visit any MTECH campus until you have been cleared by a medical professional.
