MTECH Energy Sustainability Program

Our Sustainability Achievements

Water Conservation Garden

At the Lehi campus, the energy team created a water conservation garden that reuses excess water from the chiller system. This water helps sustain the plants, reducing the need for freshwater.
Why It Matters: This garden serves as a practical example of water recycling, contributing to our sustainability goals.

Smart HVAC Scheduling

We actively manage HVAC system schedules, ensuring that energy use aligns with classroom and building needs, cutting down on unnecessary cooling and heating.
Why It Matters: By reducing energy waste, it lowers the college carbon footprint and cuts costs.

Pre-Cooling IDEX System

Our innovative pre-cooling system uses cool morning air from cooling towers to circulate through buildings before HVAC systems turn on. This reduces the load on air conditioning systems during peak hours.
Why It Matters: Cuts down on electricity use, saving energy and improving building comfort.

Xeriscaping Project

We’re replacing traditional grass with drought-resistant plants through our xeriscaping initiative. This reduces the need for irrigation and supports local biodiversity.
Why It Matters: Xeriscaping helps conserve water and showcases beautiful, low-maintenance landscapes that are suited to the climate.

What does it mean to be sustainable?

At Mountainland, sustainability means making small and simple changes for today and the future. We focus on reducing waste, conserving energy and water, and creating an environment that supports the planet and the community. The MTECH energy program is designed to:

  • Cut down on resource use
  • Find creative ways to repurpose materials and systems
  • Lead by example in building sustainable practices for future generations

Get Involved

You can play a part in making our campus more energy-efficient with simple everyday actions:

  • Close Doors: Help maintain the efficiency of our HVAC system by ensuring doors are closed in classrooms and offices. This reduces the workload on the system, saving energy.
  • Use Blinds: Close blinds throughout the day to block direct sunlight. This helps keep rooms cooler and lessens the need for air conditioning.
  • Turn Off Electronics: Make sure computers, lights, and other electronics are turned off when not in use, especially at the end of the day. Every little bit helps reduce energy consumption.

By adopting these small habits, we can collectively make a big impact on reducing energy use and enhancing sustainability on campus.
