Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. Heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join beams in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries.
The Welding Technology Level 1 program will give you the foundation to work in any of these industries. In this program you will learn about the more than 100 different processes that a welder can use to create the most effective type of weld based on the types of metals being joined and the conditions in which you’re welding.
This program has both classroom instruction and hands-on learning. You won’t just be learning about welding, you will have the opportunity to become skilled in shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding.
Your instruction will include learning about welding and cutting processes- including the joining of parts according to blueprints and written specifications, industrial requirements for occupational skills in the welding field, drawing and welding symbol interpretation, and thermal cutting processes.
MTECH’s Welding Technology Program prepares students for employment as tackers, welding operators, in industrial and farm maintenance, all-position structural welders, aluminum and stainless TIG welders, welding foreman, supervisors, consultants, and welding inspectors.
Adults and high school seniors only.
High School students are eligible to enter the Welding I program on the August and January start dates only.
Registration is open on the last Monday of each month. Students usually start the first Monday of the following month. To check seat availability, create a new student account in the MTECH Student Portal and check seat availability or call Student Services at 801-753-6282.
Students should coordinate with home high school counselors prior to registration.
Students enrolling in this program must meet with an MTECH Academic and Career Counselor prior to registration. High School students are encouraged to be accompanied by a parent. To schedule an appointment please visit MTECH Counselors.
Students are required to take the MTECH Entrance Assessment and score a passing rate of: Math: 2: English: B or provide alternative documentation to prove competency. The Entrance Assessment is free and takes about an hour to complete. To learn more visit mtec.edu/testing.
