The Heavy Equipment Operator program is 3-year program that combines on-the-job experience with 480 hours of classroom and lab experience. 

Level One students receive 160 hours of Classroom and Lab instruction in basic areas such as safety, construction math, use of hand tools and power tools. As the course progresses, curriculum like identification of heavy equipment, basic operational techniques, utility tractors, grades, and OSHA regulations are taught.

  • Students must take the MTECH Entrance Assessment. The Entrance Assessment is free and takes about an hour to complete. To learn more visit mtec.edu/testing.
  • Students must be employed by a contractor who is a member of the AGC of Utah.

Most participating employers cover the cost of tuition and books for their employees. Cost per semester can vary slightly, but most semesters total cost is under $800.

Sponsoring employers are required to pay students a minimum wage based on a sliding scale up to the minimum journeyman wage. Most companies pay far more than the minimum.
