Medical Billing is the process of sending and following up on medical claims that have been submitted to health insurance companies ensuring that proper reimbursement is received. The need for medical billers has greatly increased due to the demand for knowledge and understanding of Healthcare Compliance, patient privacy and both government and commercial payers.

Additional responsibilities of a Medical Biller can include verifying patient health plan coverage, gathering and updating patient information, obtaining prior authorization for treatment and posting payments to patient accounts. This program will train students to understand the complete medical billing cycle, become familiar with CPT, HCPCS Level II and ICD-10-CM codes, how to read and understand an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and CMS 1500 claim form.
Students completing this program will be able to apply for employment opportunities in doctor’s offices, clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, labs, public health facilities and insurance companies.

Adults and high school students who are age 16 and older and at least a junior in high school.

Registration is open on the last Monday of each month. Students usually start the first Monday of the following month. To check seat availability, create a new student account in the MTECH Student Portal and check seat availability or call Student Services at 801-753-6282.

  • Students should coordinate with home high school counselors prior to registration.
  • Students enrolling in this program are required to meet with an MTECH Academic and Career Counselor prior to registration. High School students are encouraged to be accompanied by a parent. To schedule an appointment please visit mtec.edu/counseling.
  • Satisfy Entrance Requirements with Testing Center.
  • Basic computer and digital literacy skills required.

Medical billers work with an insurance company to ensure that claims are processed accurately and then promptly and correctly paid. Medical Billers also manage patient accounts by posting payments, sending out invoices and following up on denied or rejected claims.

Medical Billers can work in a variety of office and hospital settings, for insurance companies or third-party billing services.

Introduction to Medical Billing
The Introduction to Medical Billing course starts with a new student orientation and an outline of the Medical Billing course and program policies. Students complete assignments in Word and Excel that are essential for the workplace. Students create a cover letter and current resume.
Medical Billing Block 1
The Medical Insurance Billing I course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. Students will become acquainted with the role of a Medical Billing Specialist, review the importance of patient privacy, differences between fraud and abuse and the basics of health insurance.
Medical Billing Block 2
The Medical Insurance Billing 2 course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. This course will provide an overview and background of both commercial and government insurance programs and the safeguards in place to prevent and pursue fraudulent activity in healthcare.
Medical Billing Block 3
The Medical Insurance Billing 3 course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. This course will discuss the differences between Worker’s Compensation laws and Disability Income insurance, benefits and programs. Students will understand the importance of correct medical documentation in the health record.
Medical Billing Block 4
The Medical Insurance Billing 4 course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. This course provides a preview into procedural coding and compares a paper claim to an electronic claim. Students will learn the differences between a denied and rejected claim and how to correct claims.
Medical Billing Block 5
The Medical Insurance Billing 5 course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. This course provides students the opportunity to read real life examples of explanation of benefits statements, remittance advice forms and insurance cards. Students will learn the differences between Hospital Outpatient and Inpatient billing and practice several tasks in practice management software program.
Medical Billing Block 6
The Medical Insurance Billing 6 course is designed to provide the student with advanced skills necessary to perform and understand current processes regarding medical billing and collection concepts, regulations and guidelines. The last course in this program will prepare students to seek and apply for a position in this field. Students will finalize their resume, cover letter and meet with a Career Placement Specialist.
