What is the function of the Custom Fit Training Program?
Utah State Custom Fit Training is a non-profit program using state funds to stimulate workforce and economic development and provide businesses with a trained workforce. This is accomplished by providing company specific customized training to business and industry. Within the Mountainland Region (one of ten around the state), the Custom Fit program is administered by the Mountainland Technical College (MTECH).

This unique program offers you, your company, and your employees the benefit of state-of-the-art training and development, customized to meet your specific needs, and does so at a cost that you can afford. How? The Utah State Legislature appropriates funds each year as an investment in Utah’s economy through Custom Fit, which means your tax dollars are coming back to serve you! The Custom Fit program funds a large portion of the training costs.

What must my company do to qualify for Custom Fit training funds?
Since Custom Fit funds are used to provide training to a maximum number of companies in the Mountainland Region, each company’s training needs are assessed and prioritized prior to obligating limited funds to specific companies. When funds are available, to qualify for training, a company must be for -profit and pay taxes to the State of Utah.
To be able to receive a discount on Custom Fit Training, a company must first be qualified. This is a simple one-time process. You may either contact us by phone or fill out a short form.
Which of my employees may receive Custom Fit training?
Those receiving training must be employed by the company and work a minimum of 1,300 hours per year (an average of 25 hours per week).
Must my company be a specific size to receive Custom Fit training?
Any size company may receive Custom Fit training. We do training for individual contractors where there may only be one full-time employee up to companies with hundreds of employees.
Who obtains the instructors for Custom Fit training?
Instructors are to be secured by the MTECH staff. While final selection of instructors is the ultimate decision of the MTECH staff, company representatives are consulted during the selection process. If, in rare instances, an instructor is selected to teach for his or her own company, arrangements must be made to ensure the instructor is on his or her own time and is paid only by the MTECH for the time of instruction.
Where do the Custom Fit instructors come from?
The MTECH maintains a pool of qualified teachers for your training needs. Most Custom Fit instructors come from within the business community and are specialists in their fields. Depending on the courses taught, a few instructors come from the faculties of educational institutions such as UVU and BYU.
What should a company expect to pay for Custom Fit training?
Prior to training, companies will receive a Training Agreement outlining course content, as well as, Custom Fit and company costs. Custom Fit may be able to contribute up to 50% of the cost of training. Companies are responsible for paying their portion of the training expenses directly to the MTECH upon receipt of the itemized bill.
What types of expenses are covered by Custom Fit training funds?
Custom Fit training funds cover such expenses as training needs assessment, curriculum development, instructor wage, instructional materials, and classroom/lab facilities. Equipment and lodging expenses are not covered.
Where are Custom Fit courses taught?
The MTECH has four facilities; one at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, one in American Fork, one in Spanish Fork and another in Orem. All four locations have state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs and ample parking. Depending on the needs of the company and the content of the specific course, training may be offered either at the MTECH, or on-site at the company.
Depending on the availability of employees and their time constraints, Custom Fit training is most often provided on company premises. For example, many of our Microsoft applications classes are taught at individual companies. Custom Fit personnel commonly transport laptops (one per trainee) to a company site along with an LCD projector and other training equipment.
The instructor travels to the company site and instructs the course, after which the training equipment is returned to the MTECH. If multiple training sessions are needed to cover the material, the process is repeated until the course is complete.
When are Custom Fit courses taught?
Our mission is to respond to company training needs within 48 hours of an inquiry. This includes the selection of curriculum, instructors and facilities. Courses are arranged based on company schedules or shifts, and employee availability. Courses have been taught as early as 6:00 a.m., and as late as midnight to accommodate shift work and instructor availability.
Does a Custom Fit trainees receive credit for a course?
No, however, those attending Custom Fit courses will receive a certificate of completion listing the course name, date and number of hours completed.
What is the optimum size for a Custom Fit class?
There are no size restrictions for Custom Fit courses. The cost per trainee is greater for small classes. As a rule of thumb, most courses should have at least 6 trainees to be cost effective. Computer classes should have no more than 16 students. A forklift class may only have 2 to 4 trainees. For many other classes the optimum number is between 8 and 20 employees.
What is the largest dollar amount the Custom Fit Program will provide for training?
There is no maximum dollar amount, but it is the goal of the MTECH Custom Fit program to spread its training dollars over the maximum number of employees possible to accomplish the greatest good.
Can Custom Fit training funds be used to pay for Online and regular Classroom courses?
Custom Fit training funds may be used to help pay for only MTECH Online and Classroom courses. We encourage companies to take full advantage of these courses for their employees, especially where there are only a small number of individuals who need the training.
What if my company does not qualify for Custom Fit funds, or Custom Fit funds are not available?
Private customized training can be arranged to provide training for company employees at a reduced rate. We draw from an experienced, qualified pool of instructors to offer training. The company will pay all expenses. In most cases, the cost is well below commercial rates.
