CUSTOM FIT

Customized training

Customized training and development for your company and employees.

Custom Fit is a statewide training program. This unique program offers you, your company, and your employees the benefit of state-of-the-art training and development, customized to meet your specific needs. The Utah State Legislature appropriates funds each year as an investment in Utah’s economy through Custom Fit.

These funds allow us to subsidize up to 40% of the cost of training to qualified for-profit companies. Custom Fit Training is the perfect solution for entrepreneurial and growing companies that would benefit from partially-subsidized training programs. Our goal is to help organizations grow, train, and retain an efficient and productive employee base.

Frequently asked questions

This unique program offers you, your company, and your employees the benefit of state-of-the-art training and development, customized to meet your specific needs, and does so at a cost that you can afford. How? The Utah State Legislature appropriates funds each year as an investment in Utah’s economy through Custom Fit, which means your tax dollars are coming back to serve you! The Custom Fit program funds a large portion of the training costs.

You will be assigned a representative who will assess your business needs. Then by working together, we can select the best service provider(s) to meet your requirements. We’ll then determine where training will take place: at your site, at one of our MTECH facilities, or in an online/webinar format.

The Mountainland Custom Fit Program works with businesses located in Utah, Wasatch, and Summit counties.

To qualify for Custom Fit funding a company must be for-profit and and pay taxes to the State of Utah. The company must also reside in the Mountainland Region. The company should contact Custom Fit and answer a few simple questions to be added to our database of qualified companies.

Those receiving training must be employed by the company.

Any size company may receive Custom Fit training. We do training for individual contractors where there may only be one full-time employee up to companies with hundreds of employees.

While final selection of instructors is the ultimate decision of our Custom Fit staff, company representatives are consulted during the selection process.  If, in rare instances, an instructor is selected to teach for his or her own company, arrangements must be made to ensure the instructor is on his or her own time and is paid only by Custom Fit for the time of instruction.

Most Custom Fit instructors come from within the business community and are specialists in their fields. Depending on the courses taught, a few instructors come from the faculties of educational institutions such as MTECH, UVU and BYU.

Prior to training, companies will receive a Training Agreement outlining course content, as well as Custom Fit and company costs. Custom Fit may be able to contribute up to 50% of the cost of training, although it will usually be 10-40%.

Custom Fit training funds cover such expenses as training needs assessment, curriculum development, instructor wage, instructional materials, and classroom/lab facilities. Equipment, travel, and lodging expenses are not covered.

Courses are arranged based on company schedules or shifts, and employee availability. Courses have been taught as early as 6:00 a.m., and as late as midnight to accommodate shift work and instructor availability.

Those attending our courses may receive a Recognition of Training listing the course name, date and number of hours completed, but this is not college credit. Certain selected courses may qualify for Continuing Education credits.

There are no size restrictions for Custom Fit courses. The cost per trainee is greater for small classes. As a rule of thumb, most courses should have at least 6 trainees to be cost effective.

There is no maximum dollar amount, but it is the goal of our department to spread our training dollars over the maximum number of employees possible to accomplish the greatest good. As a general rule, the more expensive the class, the lower the percentage that Custom Fit will contribute to the cost.

Yes. The Pandemic has opened up many online course offerings from highly effective trainers. Custom Fit would be happy to help with online classes.

No. Because the cost of MTECH programs are already taxpayer subsidized, Custom Fit funds may not be used.

Private customized training can be arranged to provide training for company employees at a reduced rate. We draw from an experienced, qualified pool of instructors to offer training. The company will pay all expenses. In most cases, the cost is well below commercial rates.

No. To avoid a conflict of interest, full-time MTECH employees and their immediate family members do not qualify for Custom Fit funds, even if they own a business that would otherwise qualify for assistance.

No. Custom Fit funds are specifically set aside for short term training, not degrees or programs. As a rule of thumb, if students can get state or federal financial aid for a program, then it wouldn’t qualify for Custom Fit funding.

No. Custom Fit can help you create highly customized training that is specific to your business or we can help you participate in popular prepackaged training. We associate with a large selection of highly effective training providers, but if you have worked with a particular trainer that you’re very fond of then we would be happy to consider them.

Yes. As long as your business is located in our region of Utah, then Custom Fit would be happy to help with most training events, regardless of location. Keep in mind, however, that Custom Fit can only help with the training costs, not travel or lodging.
